A 6.30am taxi to Terminal 3 at London Heathrow to take my 11.30am flight aboard a splendid Singapore Airlines Airbus A 380, my second flight in less than 3 weeks aboard one of these huge double decker aircraft that seat 470 people with the best occupying a suite of rooms with an ensuite bathrooms! Goodness knows how much that costs but since I’m not listed in the Sunday Times Rich List it will be of no concern to me.
It proved to be a very comfortable with a pleasant crew of beautiful Singaporean stewardesses who must all have been over 5ft 10ins and with other vital figures to match!
I didn’t see much of Tuesday since the flight to Singapore was 12 hours and with Singapore plus 7 hours BST ahead but the flight seemed to pass quickly enough as I chatted to an Irish lassie emigrating to New Zealand to take up a job as a child optician.
It seemed very strange flying into Changi Airport at Singapore where I had only been 6 week’s previously on my cruise from Dubai to San Diego and where I had enjoyed a breakfast with the ‘Relatives’ – Orang-utans – at Singapore Zoo. I only had a 2-hour stopover before boarding my second Singapore Airlines flight to Hanoi another 3.5 hours north in Vietnam to be greeted on landing by our local guide Quang who would be with us until we flew south again to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in a few days time.
A smooth transfer to the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel and a wash and a 30-minute power snooze saw me ready to renew my acquaintance with Lesley and Bob from Sydney, whom I had met in the Antarctic in November 2011!
