We made one interesting stop at a very ancient bridge with traditional naga (Multi-headed snakes) guarding each end of the parapets. Mythical serpents, or n?gas, represent an important motif in Khmer architecture. They are frequently depicted as having multiple heads, always uneven in number, arranged in a fan. Each head has a flared hood, in the manner of a cobra. They reminded me of the serpents that adorned the balustrades of Mayan Temples in Mexico.
The last photo is of some group (!) crossing the bridge in extreme heat, which may account for why yours truly seems to have got a ‘right grump on his face’!! (Photo courtesy of Helen)
