At 8.30am we departed on a local riverboat for Cai Be, one of the most important towns in Western Vietnam and the gateway to the Mekong Delta. It was established in the Nguyen Dynasty (19th Century) and is located on the left hand side of the Upper Mekong. Today it is an important centre for the distribution of agricultural products and a huge draw for locals in terms of food and merchandise. Although the wares on sale are not unusual – local vegetables and fruits such as melon, durian and banana – it’s the manner of shopping that is unusual since it is a floating market. All the goods are transported to the market by raft or boat and advertised by hanging them from poles, called “cay beo”, while shoppers mill about in smaller craft.
After meandering through the busy floating market we landed to visit the Cathedral. Sadly I can’t find anything much about this cathedral so enjoy the photo and we will move on.
